Rank Advancement This Tuesday, 5/24/16 at 6:30 PM

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This coming Tuesday, 5/24/16, is an exciting night for our scouts – It’s Rank Advancement! The ceremony is in the Church Sanctuary and begins at 6:30 PM.
This is a class A uniform event.
We know that it is hard on our families to come early for the ceremony but we do ask that those that can come early, please do. We have divided up the responsibilities as follows below:
  • Setup: Bear Den – 6:10 pm
  • Pack Greeters – Open Doors/Hand Out Programs: Tiger & Wolf Dens – 6:15 pm
  • Flag Ceremony: Webelo I Den
We realize that for many of our families this is the first time you have been to a Rank Advancement Ceremony. Please click here to see a diagram of how things are set up for Rank Advancement. The sign up table will be placed in the lobby area in front of the church sanctuary. Once you are inside the sanctuary, the boys will sit with their dens and their families will sit behind them. You will notice that I reserved two pews for the Webelo I and for the Wolf den, they are our largest dens. We will see when we get there, if we actually need tow pews or not.
As a part of the ceremony, the boys will take off their old neckerchief and slide, walk across the bridge and receive a new neckerchief, slide and book for their new rank. We welcome parents taking pictures, but please be mindful of the boys trying walk by and other parents trying to see or wanting to take pictures as well.
Below are the current sign ups for this Tuesday. Tuesday is the deadline for unpaid

Cub Scout Day Camp Online Registration Available on Sunday, May 1st

Dear Pack Family,
I hope you are all well. I wanted to let you know that I heard last night that the on-line registration for Day Camp will be available from the Council website by this Sunday, May 1st!
Camp is the week of July 11-15th. Our location has changed since the flier was published. We are now going to be at the Children’s Home off of Reynolda road in Winston Salem. The hours are 8:30 – 4:30 each day except on Friday. On Friday, we will have a parent luncheon and end early. Early drop off and late pick up will be available as well by prearrangement.
I am also looking for volunteers to work Day Camp. The council is putting the application on-line as well. I would love to have adults and youth. The volunteers do not have to be BSA as there is required BSA training to work with the boys.

Saturday’s Pack Hike A Few More Notes

Dear All,

I hope you are all having a great week. We are looking forward to Saturday’s hike. Just a few reminders:

Arrival Time: We originally planned the day to start at 2:00 PM but to ensure that everyone is ready to start the Program with the Hanging Rock Rangers at 2:00 PM, we have adjusted our arrival time to 1:30 PM (You may have noticed the timing change in the information that went out last Sunday). If you expect to be late, please let me know. Cell service is dicey up there so the earlier you can let us know that better. Shannon – 336-692-4519.

Water bottles: Please do not forget to bring a water bottle for each person in your family. In addition to using the water on the actual hike, you will be using your water bottle for your cookout drink as well. We will have water or lemonade available but you will need to use your water bottle to put the water or lemonade in. We are trying to avoid generating extra trash and respect our environment. Please put your names on your water bottles. If something happens to your water bottle and it is leaking, is crushed or is dropped over the side of the hanging rock, please see me and we will figure it out.

Cookout Food: We are grateful that everyone is bringing food from home for the cookout. Please pack it so it can be left in your car during the hike without spoiling and bring it with you to the picnic shelter after the hike. Please label your dishes and utensils so we can make sure they go home with you.

Program: As mentioned above, the Park Rangers are doing a program about the Indians who lived at Hanging Rock and the boys will be playing some of the games that the Indian children played. The program will be outside on the right side of the Visitor’s Center (as you are facing the Visitor’s Center). If you are running behind, that is where everyone will be, however, please check in with me even if you are late. I think it is probably too late in our friendship for me to try to hide my compulsiveness. ☺

I will post this on the main page of the pack website as well.

It is going to be a great day trip!

See you Saturday,

Shannon

Pack Hike Details For The 4/23/16 Trip

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. The details below are for the upcoming Pack Hike on Saturday, April 23rd. This is one of my favorite activities that the pack does. It is going to be a great time. We have 87 people and 2 dogs signed up to go on the trip. We may have some more that sign up on Tuesday night.

2016 Pack Hike

Location & Time:

Timing:

  • Please arrive at 1:30 pm.
  • We will meet in front of the visitor’s center.
  • Please check in with Shannon as she has the event list of participants. If your schedule changes and you are not coming or you run into travel issues and will be late, please contact Shannon at 336-692-4519 or Stefano Marsella at 336-749-2949 as cell reception allows. We will be looking  for you if you are on the sign up list.
  • You may leave anytime after the cookout.

Plan:

  • The park rangers will have a presentation for the scouts at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at the visitor center. The presentation will last about 30 minutes.
  • The hike will begin around 2:40 pm. We will be hiking in one big group made up of smaller groups based on den. Stefano Marsella will lead the hike and the tiger den will go with him. We will have walkie-talkie communication between the hike leader and the hike sweeper at the end of the group.
  • We will hike the Hanging Rock Trail (1.3 miles).
  • The trail is wide and has a gravel surface for most of its length, but becomes more narrow and rocky near the top. This trail, although short, is rated “more difficult” since it climbs steeply and has some obstacles.
  • Blaze color: Orange
  • Parents: to ensure everyone’s safety, please stay with your children at all times (unless you have arranged for another able adult to accompany them). This is a “must” since the terrain can be treacherous.
  • Please check in with Shannon once you are off the trail. She has the participant list. If you don’t check in with her, she will assume you are still on the trail and if we can not locate you within a reasonable amount of time, we will begin combing the trail with the Ranger looking for you and your family.
  • At present, we are planning to have dinner served at the picnic tables near the lake area, if that changes we will let everyone know.

What to bring:

  • There is no cost to participants for this activity
  • Please wear class B uniform (cub scout t-shirt) for this event.
  • Please bring the dessert, side dish or other cookout items that you signed up to bring. If you don’t remember what you signed up to bring, click here.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Bring a light jacket or rain poncho for weather
  • Bring a water bottle for the hike

Cookout

  • We are fortunate to have Mack Moore organizing the cookout. We will be having hotdogs grilled at the picnic shelter, side dishes and desserts brought by our pack members. Click here to see what everyone signed up to bring.
  • If you are able to bring a couple packs of hot dog buns and some drinks, please email me back.
  • We could use two volunteers to stay at the shelter during the hike to help set up the food with Mack.

How to get there:

  • From Winston Salem, NC take Highway 8 North to Danbury. Turn left at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital on Hanging Rock Road. It is 1.5 miles to the park from here.
  • Or, you can enter the address above in your GPS

Community Garden: Yesterday, we planted our own pack vegetable bed (4 x 8 bed) as a part of the larger community garden at Mt Tabor UMC during the church’s Great Day of Service. The output will go to the Samaritan Inn. Thank you to the families that came out to help. We planted grape tomatoes, sweet peppers, mini eggplant, and broccoli. We also put some marigolds and lavender in to keep the pests away.
I don’t know if I will have all the watering procedures from the Community Garden coordinator by Tuesday, but please check (and keep checking) with the sign up table, if you would like to sign up for a week of looking after the pack vegetable bed. This is a great way for your scout to get his service needed to move to the next rank, you can do it over the summer and finish off that requirement before the school year starts. Please click these links to see the picture of the boys and parents planting and the picture of the finished bed. Last night, the Stevens family came by and worked on the fencing to keep the deer from snacking on our garden. Thank you!
