Reminder – No Cub Scout Pack Meeting or Pie Throw for Tonight and an Events Committee Meeting

Hi Everyone,
What a big snow break we have had! I just wanted to remind you that we are not meeting tonight. We have a policy of No School, No Scouts. So if Public School is cancelled then Scouts is cancelled as well.
We will be having our den meetings next week on 2/2/16 at 7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC.
Prior to the Den Meetings on 2/2/16, we are having a meeting at 6:00 PM in the upstairs Library for any parents interested in volunteering to coordinate pack events or help shop for event supplies. We invited those that specified that they were interested on the parent volunteer forms but if we accidently missed you, please let me know.
We would love to have all the help and new ideas we can get!
Take care –
Shannon

Potential WS/FCS School Cancellation and Tomorrow Night’s Pack Meeting

Dear All,
I hope you are well. You probably recall the pack wide email I sent out earlier this month pointing out the Pack Inclement Weather Policy on the website. Please click here to view the policy.

Our policy states that if there is no school then there is no scouts. So if the WS/FCS system cancels school for tomorrow, then we will not meet, our Pie Throw will be rescheduled and our sign up deadlines will be extended.
Please contact me with questions or concerns.

Cub Scout Reminder – Pack Meeting & Pie Throw This Tuesday, 1/26/16 – New Location

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This coming Tuesday, 1/26/16, at 7:00 PM, we will have our Pack Meeting and our Popcorn Pie Throw.

  • The Tiger Den (1st grade) has the setup for this pack meeting, for those that are able, please come 15 minutes early.
  • The Wolf Den (2nd grade) has the Flag Ceremony for the pack meeting, for those that are able, please come 10 minutes early.
What is the Pie Throw? Scouts that sold enough popcorn earned free pies to throw at our leaders and those that didn’t earn pie tickets and want to the throw pies at our leaders, can by purchasing a ticket for a pie for $5.00 (cash, check or charge). This is a fundraiser for our pack scouts on financial aid, please consider participating in this event. It is very entertaining. Since this event can get messy, let’s have the scouts wear their class B uniforms (Cub Scout T-Shirt), if you are new and don’t have one yet, any t-shirt is fine.

Please note: This event is bring held at Highland Presbyterian Activities Center not Mt Tabor UMC. The center is located in the Parking Lot beside the building marked 2319 Cloverdale Ave in Winston Salem. Enter the building by using the side door in the parking lot, not the front door of the facility. If you are lost Tuesday night, please contact me.
We will have separate tables for selling pie tickets and making pies. The process is that you purchase or pick up your tickets at the ticket table with Amanda Treadway and then the scout takes his tickets to Liza Wearn, at the Pie Table, who will take his tickets and make his pies.  The scout then goes to the line for whichever leader he would like pie.
Parents & Guardians: Tuesday night, all of our den leaders will be busy getting pies in the face and we will need your help to keep the boys following the rules to be sure that they are safe. Please watch them. If they need to reenter the building during the pie throw, please escort them, they can not wander around the Highland Presbyterian Activities Center unattended.  If you see one of the boys wandering around the activity center or not following one of the rules below and you are not comfortable stopping him, please come get me and I will talk to him. Other Pie Throw rules are as follows:
  • No running
  • No throwing pies at anyone but the leaders who are participating in the pie throw
  • After receiving your pie, form a line in front of a participating leader
  • One scout at time throws a pie at the leader at the front of his line
  • No jumping on the leaders
Please talk with your scouts and siblings ahead of time about the rules. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the moment.
Additionally, there have been some scouts wearing “heelys” to scout meetings. These are sneakers with little wheels in the heel of the shoe. The leaders have discussed this and we believe these shoes are too dangerous on the slick church floors especially when the boys may be playing a game or some other activity. Please do not bring your scout or siblings to pack activities wearing heelys. Please note that some of these shoes will allow you to temporarily remove the wheel from the shoe and put it back in later, the scouts and siblings can wear the heelys without the wheels. Please help us keep the children safe by not bringing them or their siblings to scouts with wheels in the heels of their shoes.
This week, we are continuing the sign ups for the pack Lock-in (2/5/16), WFU Basketball Scout Game (2/6/16 at noon),  Cub Scout Sunday (2/7/16), the Sciworks Sleepover in March (deadline of February 9th) and the Carolina Raptor Visit on 2/23/16.

BSA Scouting for Food Campaign – What is it and How Does it Work

Dear All,
I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know that each year, Boy Scouts of America has a Scouting for Food Campaign to raise food for local food banks.
I probably don’t have to tell you how many families are struggling for basic food in our community. After our camping trips and events, the pack donates unopened, leftover food to the food pantries in our area. I am always stunned when I deliver the food at how many families with children and babies are in line waiting their turn.
This year, we would like to thank our neighbors at Northwest Baptist Church for their support during our popcorn delivery this fall and donate the food our scouts collect to their food pantry.
At our pack meeting on Tuesday, 1/26/16 and our den meetings on Tuesday, 2/2/16, you can pick up your door hangers to pass out to your friends and Neighbors. If you miss these meetings, you can contact me to get the door hangers or you can collect by word of mouth, whichever you prefer. I think the important part is that we get the word out and bring in the food. This campaign is partnered with WFMY News Channel 2, so there will be some media coverage.
The door hangers instructor the recipients to put their collected food in a grocery bag and leave it on their front porch or on their driveway by Saturday, 2/13/16 at 9:00 AM. I have added some information on the back of the door hangers that list suggested items from The Bread of Life Food Pantry at Northwest Baptist Church as well as some contact information. Please feel free to add additional contact information to the back of the door hanger. Click here to see the list of suggested items for the Bread of Life Food Pantry in case you are collecting food without door hangers.
Please bring in your collected food to the Den Meeting on 2/16/16. We are looking forward to taking a good amount of food to Northwest Baptist Church. If something happens and you need to turn in your food later than this deadline, please let me know.
Additionally, Mt Tabor UMC will also be collecting food during the Scout Sunday Services. The Cub Scout Pack and the Boy Scout Troop are working together on the Scout Sunday food drive efforts. Scout Sunday is 2/7/16.

Blue & Gold Banquet – What Is It & Help Needed

Hello Everyone,
I hope you are all well. I wanted to pass on some information about the Pack’s Blue & Gold Banquet. I remember being new to the pack, not knowing what this banquet was and wondering why we didn’t have it at the end of the scout year since the term banquet implies a celebration at the end or beginning of something to me.
To clear up the mystery, the Blue & Gold Banquet is a celebration of the birthday of Cub Scouting (or Cubbing as it was originally called) which started in 1930. So this Blue & Gold Banquet is in celebration of Cub Scouting’s 86th birthday. Over the years, it became combined in with the Webelo II Den briding to Boy Scouts and many families assumed that it was a Webelo II Graduation. While the Webelos II den will be “graduating” to the Boy Scout Troop that night and that is certainly a big part of the night, it is also a birthday party for Cub Scouting.
In terms of your calendar, the Blue & Gold Banquet is set for Friday, March 4th. There is a series of events associated with the banquet. Some families come to all of the parts of the evening and some can only come to the banquet. Please do what works best for your family.
  • At 5:30 PM, in the Mt Tabor UMC Sanctuary, there will be an Arrow of Light Ceremony. The Webelos II who have earned their Arrow of Light and/or the Cubmasters’ Award will receive their awards. The Webelo I den is asked to be charge of the Flag Ceremony.
  • At 6:00 PM, the Boy Scout Troop will meet us in the Fellowship Hall for the Bridging Ceremony which means that the Webelos II will cross the bridge from the Pack to the Troop. They then become Raven Scouts.
  • At 6:30 PM, or when those attending the Bridging arrive and are seated, the banquet will begin.  Please note: The Pinewood Derby Awards will be given out at the Banquet as well.
I think it is helpful for the younger boys to be able to see what they will be doing as they progress in Cub Scouts and where the “trail” leads so if it is possible for the younger boys to see some of the early ceremonies, please bring them.
This year, we would really like to bring out the birthday party theme for the boys. With a pack our size, we will need lots of help. Thank you to those of you who have already spoken with me about helping with Blue & Gold Night. However, we will need more help. Here is the way the tasks are broken down to prepare for the event and for Night of the actual Event:
  • Webelos II – Plans the night, works with the dens on their parts of the night & everything else
  • Webelos I – Flag Ceremony at the Arrow of Light/Cubmaster Award Ceremony, Serves the food & clean up (everyone needs to help with this)
  • Bears – Decorations and Check in to the banquet
  • Tigers & Wolves – Games and Dessert Competition
Please click here for the Blue & Gold invitation form, please fill out and return to the sign up table. I had some of these out on the sign up table last Tuesday. Please note:  there is a charge to attend the banquet, we charge to recover part of the cost of the food only.
We would love to have you and your family attend. Please come, enjoy the party and say goodbye to your Webelo II friends.
Please email me back if you want to volunteer to help get ready for this event, we will be grateful for whatever scrap of time you can give us.

Pinewood Derby “Champ Camp” on January 16th & January 23rd

Dear All,
I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know that when I was at the scout shop recently, I heard that the council will be hosting Pinewood Derby Champ Camps on January 16th & January 23rd. Here is picture of the flier from the scout shop and you can click this link to go to the council scout shop webpage.

I didn’t see a time on the flier, it just says all day. I assume that means to use the scout shop Saturday hours of 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The address for the council office & scout shop is 6600 Silas Creek Parkway, W-S, NC 27106.
They are planning to have tools, experts, “hands on help” and tips for building pinewood derby cars.
Happy Car Building!

Pack Ski & Snowboard Day Trip Details

Dear All,

I hope you are well. I have you and your scout listed as signing up to go on our pack ski and snowboarding trip to Sugar Mountain on Tuesday, January 19th.
We will meet at the Sugar Mountain ski facility located at 1009 Sugar Mountain Drive, Banner Elk, NC 28604 at 9:00 AM. It is approximately a two hour drive from Mt Tabor UMC.
Our group will meet and check in with me on the third floor in the Sugar Mountain facility. Parking is free but based on the amount of people, we may have to park further away and ride a bus up to facility. We do not require a scout uniform for this trip. Please have your scout dress comfortably based on the weather.
The ski/snowboarding lessons are available beginning at 9:00 AM and run through the day. There is not a pack schedule for the trip so you can leave when it is best for you and your family. I ask that you let me know (text is fine) that you are leaving so I am not worrying about you. Please note that we must leave the slopes by 4:30 PM as a part of our scout rate.
The tickets cover the lift, skiing all day (until 4:30), a ski or snowboard lesson, and equipment. The Sugar ticket equipment includes: a helmet, snow boots, skis/snowboard and poles. Please let me know by Tuesday, 1/12/16, if you are bringing your own helmets or not. I have to tell them at check in and not knowing that information can hold the entire pack up.
I am not a skier so I consulted Mark Wearn from the Webelo I den (thank you, Mark). He suggested that we all bring the following:
  • Warm ski coat (water resistant)
  • Ski gloves (water resistant)
  • Ski pants – if you don’t have any, you can rent them at First Flakes  (409 Harvey St, Winston-Salem, NC 27103)
  • Warm socks (not cotton, think soft wool) The socks need to be long enough to cover your scout’s calf to match the ski boot length on his leg. Bring extra socks
  • Ski helmet and goggles – helmets are available as a part the scout ski/snowboard rate equipment through Sugar, but the goggles are not. Helmets and googles are available for rent at First Flakes as well.
  • Sun glasses, if sunny
  • Scarf
  • Toboggan
  • Sun screen (for face)
  • Chapstick
  • Hot hands, if super cold, you can put them in your gloves
  • Packed lunch, snacks and juice bags – Mark says that resort food is pricey
Other notes from Mark:
Sugar Mountain will have lockers to rent. 50 cents for one open of the locker. They are about 1 cubic foot in size. Mark suggests getting a top one so water will not drop off from above and get your stuff wet.
Mark also said that that he likes to eat on the lift or on the top of the mountain because of the nice views.
I hope I covered everything, if you have questions or you think of something I missed, please contact me.
I think it is going to be a fun trip with great exposure for the kids.
Take care-
Shannon
