Cub Scout Golf Loops and the Andy Burton Mini Golf and Golf Tournament May 15th & May 16th

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to send you some information about an upcoming event sponsored through Mt Tabor UMC. In memory of a youth member, Andy Burton, whose life was cut short at 15 years old, the church has the Andy Burton Memorial Golf Tournament. Andy’s parents wanted the funds from this event to support the many mission efforts of the Mt Tabor UMC Student Ministries.

This year there are two parts to this event. For all you golfers out there the golf tournament will be on Saturday, May 16th at 1:00 at Salem Glen Golf Course. It is a Captain’s Choice Tournament.

This year, the committee has added a family cookout and mini golf tournament for us non-golfers and children. There will be music and food as well as prizes on Friday night, May 15th at Smiley’s mini golf course. When I read this I thought, the boys could earn some of their requirements for their cub scout golf loops and pins.

You can register for both events at Youth Website. Greg and Amanda will have fliers about these events at the sign up table tonight.

Take care-
Shannon

Cub Scout Bike Rodeo This Week

Dear All,

This Tuesday, May 5th, we will have our Bike Rodeo in the parking lot of Mt Tabor UMC beginning at 7:00 pm. Each scout is encouraged to bring a bike or non-motorized scooter to ride through the event. Helmets will be required at all times or your scout can not participate.

There will be a series of stations that cover safety, maintenance, obstacles and precision riding skills that each cub can attempt. The goal is the teach the boys about bike safety, proper maintenance and good safe riding skills.

We ask that parents supervise their scouts closely and especially between the stations to prevent bike collisions. This is a class B uniform event.

Please don’t forget that on May 19th, we will have an “Invite a friend” Game Night in the Family Life Center. Please invite any friends that you think would enjoy joining Cub Scouts. We look forward to meeting your friends!

At the sign up table this week, we will continue the sign ups for the Spring Family Camping Trip for the week-end of May 29th and have more camp cards available! We will also have Day Camp Registration Forms and Outdoor Program Permission Forms at the table. I will not personally be at the bike rodeo on Tuesday as some of my older children have performances at their schools at the same time that night. Greg Irwin and Amanda Treadway will be at the sign up table in my absence. If you requested a copy of your medical forms, I have copied them and put them in brown, sealed envelopes with your name on them. You can pick them up at the sign up table.

Coming Up:
•May 12th – Leaders’ Meeting – Youth Commons 7:00 pm
•May 19th Recruitment Game Night – Invite a Friend; Family Life Center 7:00 pm
•May 26th – Rank Advancement in the Sanctuary – has a different start time than usual 6:30 pm; Final deadline on turning in your Camp Card Money to Stacy. Last official meeting of the scout year.

Pack Meeting This Week – Pie Throwing Night

Hello Scout Friends!
This Tuesday, 4/28, is our pack meeting in the family life center at 7:00 pm at Mt Tabor UMC. After our awards and announcements, the boys will adjourn to the courtyard for our annual pie throwing night. This is most definitely a Class B Uniform night.
Please review your scout’s popcorn sales documentation because each filled page on your popcorn form equals one free pie to throw at our den leaders! You can also buy more pies for $5 a pie. We are taking cash, check and charge for the pies, however, if using cash, exact amounts are encouraged as our change will be very limited. This is a cub scouting fundraiser. The money is used for scouts that need financial help attending scouting activities including camps.
We will have three tables in the courtyard. One for purchasing pies, one for picking up the pies and one for leaders’ supplies (paper towels/wipes).
I know the boys will be excited but please help us keep them from being too rough on the leaders or from trying to put pies in each other’s faces. There are popup trash cans around the perimeter, we need to make sure we put all the pie trash ends up in those cans so we can get it cleaned up when we are finished.
At the sign up table we have:
  • This meeting is the deadline to sign up for Resident Camp.
  • We still have Registration forms for District Day Camp.
  • If your scout is going to Day Camp or Resident Camp, please fill out an Outdoor Programs Parental Permission Form. We have them at the sign up table and they are on our pack website.
  • If you need a copy of your scout’s medical form for day camps, let me know. I have to have time to make copies. Also, if you signed up for Resident Camp and I have medical forms for you and your scout, I automatically make medical forms copies for you.
  • We are signing up for the Spring Family Camping Trip – $25 per family. Don’t forget to check our Spring Family Trip Volunteer Sheet to note if you can help before and/or during the trip.
  • We also have Camp Cards at the table – Sales Price $5/Card and $2.50 per card sold in credits to use on pack events!
On the horizon:
  • Next Meeting: May 5th: Bike Rodeo – if a scout doesn’t ride a bike yet, scooters (non-motorized) are fine to bring. Class B Uniform.
  • May 19th Recruitment Game Night – Invite a Friend; Class A uniform
  • May 26th – Rank Advancement in the Sanctuary – has a different start time than usual 6:30 pm; Final deadline on turning in your Camp Card Money to Stacy. Last official meeting of the scout year.
  • Resident Camp – June 17-20
  • Day Camp – July 6-10 or July 13-17
  • First Den Meeting of the Fall – Tuesday, August 25 (WSFCS first day of school is Monday, August 24th)

2015 Pack Hike Details

Hello Everyone,
We are so excited that you signed up to join us on the upcoming Pack Hike and Cookout scheduled for Saturday, April 25th (not this coming Saturday, but the next one). Stefano Marsella, our fabulous pack outdoor activity coordinator, sent the following information to be sure that everyone knows all the details.
Location & Time:
Timing:
  • Please arrive at 2:00 pm.
  • We will meet in front of the visitor’s center.
  • Please check in with me (Shannon) as I have the participant list. If your schedule changes and you are not coming or you run into travel issues and will be late, please contact (call or text) me at 336-692-4519 as cell reception allows. We will be looking for you if you are on the sign up sheet.
  • You may leave anytime after the cookout.
Event Plan:
  • The park rangers will have a presentation for the scouts at 2:30 pm in the auditorium at the visitor’s center. The presentation will last about 30 minutes.
  • The hike will begin around 3:00 pm.
  • We will hike the Hanging Rock Trail (1.3 miles).
  • The trail is wide and has a gravel surface for most of its length, but becomes more narrow and rocky near the top. This trail, although short, is rated “more difficult” since it climbs steeply and has some obstacles.
  • Parents: to ensure everyone’s safety, please stay with your children at all times (unless you have arranged for another able adult to accompany them). This is a “must” since the terrain can be treacherous.
  • Blaze color: Orange
  • When you finish the hike, please check in with me (Shannon). We are tracking against our participant list for safety reasons.
  • At present, we are planning to have dinner served at the picnic tables near the lake area, if that changes we will let everyone know.
What to bring:
  • There is no cost to participants for this activity.
  • Scouts wear their class B uniform (cub scout t-shirt) for this event.
  • Please bring the dessert, side dish or other cookout items that you signed up to bring. If you don’t remember what you signed up to bring, click here.
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Bring a light jacket or rain poncho for weather changes.
  • Bring a water bottle for the hike.
Cookout
  • We are fortunate to have Mack Moore organizing the cookout. We will be having hotdogs grilled at the picnic shelter, side dishes and desserts brought by our pack members. Click here to see sign up sheet.
  • If you didn’t sign up to bring a side dish or dessert and are able to bring something else, please email us back.
  • We could use two volunteers to stay at the shelter during the hike to help set up the food with Mack.
  • We also need drinks, please email us back if you are able to help with the drinks.
How to get there:
  • From Winston Salem, NC take Highway 8 North to Danbury. Turn left at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital on Hanging Rock Road. It is 1.5 miles to the park from here.
  • Or, you can enter the address above in your GPS
I will be posting this on the home page of our pack website and on the Pack Hike page of our pack website (located under Pack Events, Outdoor Events, Pack Hike) in case you need another place to access this information.
If we have missed something or have some changes, I will be sending out another message.
Have a great remaining week and weekend.
Shannon
