Webelo Camping Trip – Better Directions

Hi All,

I hope you are well. I found my information from the Davy Jones Rendezvous (a BSA venture crew/ship competition) at Raven Point and Hagan from a couple years ago and here are better directions to the Raven Point.

From Winston-Salem: Travel south on U.S. 52 and take exit 84 Linwood Road.  At the stop sign turn left back across the U.S. 52 bridge and travel approximately 200 yards to the next stop sign near the airport.  Turn right on Hargrave Road.  Stay on this road for 9.2 miles.  The name of this road will change a few times from Hargrave Road to Old Linwood Road to Linwood-Southmont Road, but it is the same road.  After 9.2 miles the road will intersect and end at Hwy 8 in Southmont.  Turn right on Hwy 8 and travel for approximately 0.8 miles to the Wildlife Access Road and turn right.  Go approximately 0.3 miles on Wildlife Access Road and go straight into the Yachtsman’s Cove development on Scout Road.  Follow Scout Road for approximately 0.75 miles.  The entrance to Charles T. Hagan Sea Scout Base is on the left.  The entrance to Camp Raven Point is further down Scout Road on the right, next to the Skipjack Marina.

I hope this helps.

Take care-

Shannon

Cub Scout God & Family Class, Den Meetings & Popcorn Money Turn-in This Coming Tuesday, 11/17/15

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This coming week, our pack will have the last God & Family Class at 6:00 PM, Den Meetings at 7:00 PM and popcorn money turn-in.
God & Family Class: The God and Family group will meet as we have been through the series: pineapples begin in the 3rd floor library and pepperonis begin room 307 at 6:00 pm. For this last class Stacy usually orders Pizza for the boys. So the boys need to come to class hungry! This never seems to be a problem ☺.
Den Meetings: Our den meetings begin at 7:00 PM, please enter through the church office unless you are a Webelo I family and then you may want to use the old scout entrance. We will be meeting in the following locations:
(First grade) Tiger Den – Room 301
(Second grade) Wolf Den – Fellowship Hall
(Third grade) Bear Den – Room 306
(Fourth grade) Webelo I Den – Boy Scout Room – room 120
(Fifth grade) Webelo II Den – Room 305
Popcorn Money: We are also taking popcorn money this Tuesday at the sign up table in room 309. This room is located upstairs on the third floor. The sign up table will not be floating this week but will be stationary on the third floor.
We have one change on the popcorn money intake plan. We are concerned about taking large quantities of money in a public place like Airbound on 12/1. Please try to turn in your popcorn money by the pack meeting on 11/24/15. If you can’t work that out, please contact me and we will make other arrangements. The drop dead date on Popcorn Money turn in is still December 1st because we have to pay the Old Hickory Council.
Sign ups for Events/Trips: Current sign ups are for the Webelo I and Webelo II Camping Trip and the Airbound Scout Party.   Both of these events are free for our scouts to participate.  This Tuesday is the deadline to sign up for the Webelo Camping Trip. The Webelo Camping Trip also includes some nerf gun activities! The pack provides the darts.

If you are thinking of bringing your scout to Airbound, please sign up, I am trying to get a solid headcount to use for ordering the cake.w
We have sign up for a new event starting this week –  On January 19th (teacher workday on the WS/FCS School Calendar), we are planning a pack Ski/Snowboard day trip to Sugar Mountain! The scout rate is amazing. It is $25 per person for skiing and $30 per person to snowboard. This rate includes equipment rental, Skiing/Snowboarding all day, and a lesson of an hour and a half. There is one restriction – the children must be 8 years old and up to participate. You can not do both skiing and snowboarding under the group rate, you have to pick one. If you want to switch during the trip, you will need to pay the regular rate.

I will not be at Scouts on Tuesday, my daughter has a band concert, so if you have questions, please email, call or text me. Greg, Amanda & Carmen will be there at the sign up table but their main interest will be taking popcorn money.

Webelo Camping Trip Reminder & Details

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. Our Webelo Camping Trip is coming up on Friday, 11/20/15. We will be camping in the bunkhouse at Raven Point, a local Sea Base. The actual address is 1 Raven Point Rd, Southmont, NC  27351. However for the purposes of GPS systems, please use address for Hagan Sea Base (across the street) 781 Scout Road, Lexington, NC 27292. Upon arrival there are signs to direct you to Raven Point.

The drive time is approximately an hour from Mt Tabor UMC.

Our Webelo leaders are encouraging the parents to let the boys camp with just the leaders and give the parents the weekend off.

I know some of our parents were on the fence about sending their sons camping “on their own”. Please email me back and verify with me as to if you are camping with your son or not. We need a solid headcount for food.

Those boys traveling without parents should be at Mt Tabor UMC by 5:30 pm. Friday dinner is on your own so please be sure your scout has eaten before you bring them to the church.

Boys traveling with a parent should arrive at the Sea Base by 7:00 pm.

The menu for the trip is:

  • Breakfast on Saturday, – grits, oatmeal, oranges, bananas & orange juice
  • Lunch on Saturday – sandwiches – Various lunch meats and american cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, condiments, chips, apples and lemonade
  • Dinner on Saturday Walking Tacos, which are essentially loaded nachos in a Fritos bag.  We would have Frito chips, ground beef, refried beans, Colby jack cheese, lettuce tomatoes, salsa and onion.
  • Breakfast on Sunday – grits, oatmeal, oranges, bananas & orange juice and whatever leftovers the kids request.

The boys should bring:

  • Sleeping bags
  • Pillows
  • Clothes
  • Jacket
  • Pullover
  • Socks
  • Shoes – extra pair
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight/head lamp
  • toothbrush/paste
  • Small towel
  • Pocket Knife
  • Nerf Gun that shoots small standard darts (don’t bring darts)

Some of the activities for the weekend include hiking, beginning and advanced fire building and Nerf Gun activities. Please have your scout bring a nerf gun that shoots small standard darts. DO NOT BRING DARTS, THE PACK WILL PROVIDE THEM.

For those boys traveling without parents, we are planning to arrive back in town around 10:00 AM on Sunday morning. Here is the tricky part: Due to the church services and construction space restriction, we will meet across the street from the church at Leinbach park.  We will contact you if there are return arrival changes in timing.

Please Help With the Cub Scout Popcorn Delivery on Thursday, 11/12/15

Dear All,
I hope you are well. The popcorn orders are in and next Thursday, November 12th, a giant, 18 wheel tractor trailer full of popcorn will be arriving at Northwest Baptist Church with our name on it – Ta-dah! Then it is up to us to unload and sort the popcorn.
So far our volunteers consist of me, Amanda, and Mack!  Even with Mack’s wig, the three of us can’t get a tractor trailer full of popcorn ready for pick up by 5:00 pm …. We need help, so much help…..
We believe that the truck will arrive next Thursday morning around 9ish to be unloaded and sorted. I am still waiting to hear an exact time from Trails End but last year it came around 8:30ish.
If you can help, please let me know and what times you are available for next Thursday, 11/12/15.

WFU Scout Night and Sleepover Update

Hello All,

I hope you are well. I have only two more sets of football game tickets to deliver and I am hoping to do that this afternoon. Please check your tickets for tomorrow night and let me know if anything is amiss.

I received an email from our WFU contact with details for tomorrow night, I know this is similar to the information on our pack WFU game & sleepover webpage but I am going to post it below for your convenience.

I have only heard back from a handful of you regarding the sleeping over part of the evening. If you are planning to sleepover, please email me back as soon as you can. WFU is pushing for a sleepover headcount. I did check the weather and I don’t see any mention of rain for tomorrow night, if that helps your decision.

Comments from WFU:

Friday, October 30

4:00pm-6:00pm: Equipment Drop-Off at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Attendees will park in the LJVM Public Parking Lots (yellow) for the football game. Parking is $10 and a parking map has been attached for your convenience.  After parking, scouts may carry their equipment to the WF Baseball Park.  (An announcement will be made during the program at the Baseball Park following the football game informing adults when vehicles may be moved to the baseball parking lot.)

7:00pm: Wake Forest vs. Louisville Football Game Kickoff

The gates at BB&T Field will open at 5:30 PM for admission.  You can visit our redemption stand behind Deacon Hill anytime between 5:30 PM and the end of the 2nd half to claim your Wake Forest Scout Night patch.  During halftime, there will also be numerous Halloween themed activities located on the concourse near the patch pick-up location.

Post-Game: Pictures of Scouts on the Football Field & Return to Wake Forest Baseball Park for Movie

Bathrooms will be located on the concourses of the baseball field for your convenience on Friday night.

REMINDERS

  •  No campfires, camp stoves or any other cooking device is allowed at the Wake Forest Baseball park.
  • No tent stakes on the field.

Please keep my cell phone number with you in case anything comes up.

See you tomorrow night!

Cub Scout God & Family Class # 4 – Next Week, 11/3/15 6:00 pm

Dear All,
I hope you are all well. Amid all the popcorn mania, we had another fun God & Family class last night. Thank you to Dr. Mark Key for engaging the boys.
We meet next week, 11/3/15, at 6:00 pm at Mt Tabor UMC. Same third floor meeting rooms as before – Pineapples start in the library and Pepperonis start in room 307.  Our guest speaker from the Mt Tabor UMC Clergy will be Kara Harvey. (Thank you, Kara!)
We are halfway through the God & Family series. I have a great news – the God & Family Cub Scout Professional, Stacy Stevens, will be back next week so no more dealing with the replacement player, Shannon.
Although, I am a bit sad because this topic coming up is my favorite. It is all about unconditional love or the cheese on our theoretical pizza. It is entitled “In God’s family we are loved, no matter what! Because we are loved, we follow the rules.”
Of course, you can’t talk about examples of unconditional love in the bible with children without bringing up the parable of the Prodigal Son. So we (or they) will focus on Luke 15:11-32.  They will also talk about obedience in Exodus 20:12 as well as Mary & Joseph losing Jesus in Luke 2:41-52.  There is also a discussion of the 10 commandments using Exodus 20:1-17and in Deuteronomy 5:6-21.
Homework this week, you can choose one from:
(1) Saying a prayer with your family and thanking God for all the different gifts & talents God has given your family members.
(2) Taking a walk with your family and observing (with eyes, ears and nose) all the gifts God has given us in nature. Read Psalm 8 and have a family prayer of thankful praise for all the God-given gifts in nature.
I assume that Stacy won’t need me for the rest of the series, so let me tell you how much fun I had with your boys. They are bright, funny and engaging. Thank you so much for sharing them with me!
In my God & Family replacement player career, I was blessed with lots of help: Carmen Bridges, Brad Wood, Ty Brown, Emma Brown, Liza Wearn, Mark Wearn, Courtney Shields and the rotating Mt Tabor UMC clergy (who know this program like the back of their collective hand). I am grateful for every one of these wonderful people, for this support and so many other reasons. If I missed someone who helped, please know that I am thankful for your help and just a little bit scattered ;>.
Enjoy next week.
Take care-
Shannon
