Cub Scout Den Meetings this Tuesday, 3/15/16

I hope you are all well. I hear that the Sciworks Sleepover was a lot of fun last night. We had a great Trustee’s Workday this morning with the pack and the troop working together.
We will have den meetings this Tuesday, 3/15/16, at 7:00 pm at Mt Tabor UMC in our normal meeting rooms.
Tigers – Room 301
Wolves – Fellowship Hall
Bears-  Room 306
Webelos I – Boy Scout Room (Room 120)
On Tuesday, we are also continuing Pack Rechartering. We would love for your family to join us for another scout year!  The deadline for rechartering is March 29th. Please let us know what you are planning to do so we can turn our paperwork into the Old Hickory Council.  This week, we will also continue sign ups for the Pack Hike on 4/23/16, Resdient Camp on 6/15-18 and the Yorktown Weekend, 11/4/16. The sign up table is located in room 309 – come and see us!
Next week on March 22nd, we will have our Pack Meeting at 7:00 PM. We will be meeting off site at Highland Presbyterian Activities Center – some of you may remember that this is the same location where we had the Raptor Center Shows. If you are new to this location, we have found that it is best to use the address of 2380 Cloverdale Ave and head across the street from the actual church. The good news is that unless things change, this is our last off site pack meeting! Our April Pack Meeting will be back at Mt Tabor UMC.

Cub Scout Leaders’ Meeting This Tuesday, March 8th & Sciworks on Friday, March 11th

Hi All,
Last night was awesome! I think everyone had a good time either at the Arrow of Light ceremony, the Bridging ceremony and/or the Banquet! I know that I speak for myself and all the other outgoing leaders when I say Thank you for all the heartfelt, kind words and gifts. We loved serving the pack and the families.
We missed those of you that couldn’t be with us. I know this is not technically my job anymore and our leaders are actively looking for a replacement for me. I just wanted to be sure that we hold it all together until I can begin transitioning with the new pack secretary.
This week is a leaders’ meeting at 7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC in the Youth Commons. However, the Sciworks Sleepover is this coming Friday March, 11th for those signed up.  I will send out more information now that the Blue & Gold Night is behind me. Whew!
We began rechartering last week and we have some new sign ups that hit the sign up table as well. We are now signing up for the Pack Hike and the Mt Tabor UMC Trustees’ Workday.  If you don’t know what the heck rechartering is, you are not alone. I remember trying to figure that out when we were new too. Scouts is different that sports or other youth programs that you may be familiar with. Instead of membership running with the school year (August – June) it runs March to April. I know, weird, but these are timeframes that we must work with. When you joined scouts this fall, you paid a prorated fee. Now it is time to rejoin for next year, the fee for the entire year is $60.00. Please come to the sign up table to recharter at our next den meetings on March 15th.
The Trustees’ workday is this coming Saturday, March 12th from 9:00 am – 10:00 am at Mt Tabor UMC. Please meet in the cemetery accessed through the lower parking lot. This is a quick service project. It only lasts an hour. The boys will be spreading pine needles. We had some families sign up last Tuesday. Since this project is this coming Saturday, please just email or text me by Tuesday, March 8th, if you want to participate. Please bring gloves and have your scout wear his class B Cub Scout T-shirt. This  will satisfy some of the service requirements for your scout’s rank advancement.
The pack hike is on Saturday, April 23rd.  It is at Hanging Rock at 2:00 pm. We will have a brief program by the ranger. This year, the boys are going to be learning about the local Indians that inhabited Hanging Rock and learning to play some of the games the Indian children played before the pack goes on the hike. Then we will hike and return to have a cook out. The pack provides hot dogs and we ask the families to bring a side dish or a dessert. Siblings are welcome on the hike.

Cub Scout Den Meetings on Tuesday, March 1st and Blue & Gold Night, March 4th

Hello All,

I hope everyone’s power has been restored! This coming week we have Cub Scout Den Meetings at 7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC in your den meeting rooms. We will end early (7:45) again to celebrate several bobcat awards as well as other awards to be shared on Tuesday.
This coming Friday, March 4th, is the Blue & Gold Banquet. You can still sign up, I am attaching the registration form. Please see me on Tuesday.  Don’t forget that the Pie Throw has been resecheduled for immediately following the Blue and Gold banquet. Our top three Pinewood Derby winners and coolest car winners will receive their awards at the banquet as well.
Also, remember to send in any pictures you have taken this year for the Blue & Gold banquet slide show to Kendall Frederick. If you are a Webelo II family please send Kendall any pictures of your rising Raven Scout through his years with the pack. 
 
We are still chasing the Webelo II Den to get their group picture. Webelos II – Please be sure to wear your class A uniforms on Tuesday and hopefully we get one last shot at it!
We are still signing up for the Yorktown trip and Resident Summer Camp, If you signed up for Sciworks but didn’t complete a Sciworks Health form for your scout, please use the link and bring the completed form to me at the sign up table on Tuesday.

Reminder Raptor Shows This Coming Tuesday 2/23/16 & Blue & Gold Banquet Deadline

I hope you are well. I wanted to remind you that in place of our Pack Meeting this coming week, we will have the Carolina Raptor Center’s Birds of prey shows at 6:30 & 7:30.
This is a little tricky so let me explain: There is not a “Pack Meeting” so if you didn’t buy tickets to the Raptor Show, don’t come expecting a meeting. Take the night off.
Additionally, these shows are not at Mt Tabor UMC. We are using Highland Presbyterian Church Activities Center located in the parking lot beside the building marked 2319 Cloverdale avenue in Winston Salem. Please enter through the side door from the parking lot.
Please have your scout wear his class A uniform.
This Tuesday is the deadline to sign up for the Blue & Gold Banquet so if you are not coming to one of the Raptor Shows and you want to sign up for the Blue & Gold Banquet, please contact me via text or email so I can give a good headcount for the food.
We are continuing the sign ups for Yorktown and Summer Resident Camp.

Last Pinewood Derby Reminders

We were excited to see so many racers last night at the car weight in. Please remember that Pinewood Derby Race Day is a Class A Uniform Event.
There is no handling the cars unless authorized until racing is over.
The schedule for racing today is below:

Pinewood Derby Reminder This Coming Friday, 2/19 & Saturday, 2/20

I hope you are all well. I wanted to remind you about the upcoming Pinewood Derby next Friday, 2/19/16, 5 PM – 7 PM  and Saturday, 2/20/16, (see den times below).
I know this information has been on the website for several months but I am concerned about our new scout families and we are making some timing changes.  We were able to borrow a larger track that will allow us to race more cars at one time.
As previously annouced and on the pack Pinewood Derby webpage, the location is not at Mt Tabor UMC but at Burkhead UMC located at 5250 Silas Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. When traveling to Burkhead UMC from Mt Tabor UMC, please turn right from Silas Creek Parkway onto Pensby road on the left side of Burkhead UMC. Everyone should park behind the church and enter in the first door on the right as you drive into the back parking lot. I will put up some signs.
Each of dens will have their own race time:
8:00 AM – Tiger Den
9:00 AM – Wolf Den
10:15 AM – Bear Den
11:15 AM – Webelo I Den
12:30 PM – Webelo II Den
1:30 PM – Den Winners Return for a run off.
3:00 PM – Parent & Sibling Competition
The Venture Crew from Maple Springs Church will operate a snack bar from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. They will have serve breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks, coffee and hot chocolate.
Our Pack Pinewood Derby rules have been posted on the website for many months but in case you missed them I am attaching them to this message as well. For our Pinewood Derby veterans, the rules are the same as they have been for many years, however, one small change occurred earlier this year, we now allow the use BSA Colored Wheels on the cars.
If you need help, please remember you can contact our Pack Pinewood Derby Expert, Kendall Frederick and by phone at 336-749-5801.
Kendall has also agreed to run the “PWD Car Fix It Table” at the weigh in/Inspection night on Friday. He can help with small issues but you must come Friday evening with the paint and glue dry on your car.

Reminder Cub Scout Popcorn Pizza Party, Den Meetings This Tuesday, 2/16/16, Sciworks Sleepover Sign up Deadline & More

I hope you are all well. Our scout night on Tuesday, 2/16/16, begins with the  🍕Pizza Party for the top 15 Pack Popcorn Sellers at 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM in the Fellowship Hall at Mt Tabor UMC. At 7:00 PM, we will have our Cub Scout den meetings. The den meetings will end early at 7:45 PM.  Since we are not having a Pack Meeting this month due to the Raptor Visit, we are asking our den leaders to finish their den meetings early and we are going to meet in the Fellowship Hall (wolf den meeting room) for a brief Bobcat Ceremony for some of our new scouts.
🍔Please remember to bring in your Scouting for Food donations for the Bread of Life Food Pantry at Northwest Baptist Church this Tuesday.  There will be a receptacle for the food donations in the sign up room (309).

Our Bear Den is working hard on the decorations for the Blue & Gold Banquet, they would like to take pictures of each den this Tuesday, please have your scout wear his class A uniform.📷  Please note: The Webelo II den will not be at Cub Scouts this Tuesday, they will instead be meeting on Monday night with the Boy Scout Troop. We will be taking their group picture at the Boy Scout meeting.

🚨Calling all Scout Pictures! – We are putting together a slide show of all the pictures taken of our Pack 934 scouts this year for the Blue & Gold Banquet. Please send any pictures you have to Kendall Frederick. You know how the boys love to look at pictures of themselves and their friends.
 
🔥This Tuesday is the deadline for the Sciworks Sleepover sign up, payment, receipt of your scout’s Sciworks Health Form and for payment for Raptor Tickets.
🛳A new trip that is coming to the sign up table is for a weekend on the USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. This trip is scheduled for the weekend of November 4, 5, & 6. It is an awesome experience. The families will stay on the ship all weekend. They will sleep in the staff and officer quarters and eat in the ships’ galley. The entire ship is a floating museum. We will tour Fort Sumter (we will arrive by boat there) on Saturday morning and attend an aviation program on Saturday afternoon. Our pack organizes this trip every other year. The price is $101/per person. We require a $50 deposit per person at sign up and a final payment by Rank Advancement, May 24th. Here is the Yorktown website link.
 
I am also attaching fliers for two offers for Scout discounts at two South Carolina water parks. I found these at the council office. You do not have to go as a part of a pack. So if your family is planning a trip to South Carolina or if you have family in the area, these discounts may be an option for you. ☀I was given the new dates for Cub Scout Day Camp for your summer calendars, 7/11-7/15. This summer Cub Scout Day Camp will be at New Philadelphia Moravian church on Country Club Road. Last year, we had about 15 scouts from our pack attend. The boys will get to work on completing some of their new rank requirements and . Last year, we shot BBs and went to Archery everyday. Applications and pricing are not yet available yet. I will be volunteering at the camp again this summer. In years past, there have been two weeks to choose from for district day camp but this year there is only one week. When the fliers come out, we will be able to pick day camps in other districts as well. Attending Day Camp satisfies a requirement for your scout to earn the CubMaster’s Award at the end of his Cub Scout tenure.
⛺Another summer camp offered through our council is Cub Scout Resident Camp. This year the dates are 6/15-6/18. This camp is for a scout and a parent to attend together at Camp Raven Knob in Mt Airy, NC (also known as boy heaven). However, once your scout is at Wolf rank, you can ask another den parent to chaperon him at Resident Camp. You will stay over night for the dates mentioned and the boys will be able to complete some work on their new rank requirements enjoy the hiking and swimming. If you are new to the pack and have not had a chance to visit Camp Raven Knob (CRK), click here to see a video about it. Please note: the Cub Scouts will be participating in supervised, age appropriate activities at camp. I realize that some of the activities in the video are for older boy scouts.  Attending Resident Camp also satisfies a requirement for your scout to earn the CubMaster’s Award at the end of his Cub Scout tenure.

Cub Scout Leaders’ Meeting and Scout Sunday Picture

I hope you are all well. There will be a leaders’ meeting on Tuesday, 2/9/16, at Mt Tabor UMC at 7:00 PM in the Youth Commons at Mt Tabor UMC. So the boys have Tuesday off!
We have had a fun and busy scout weekend! The Lock-in Friday night was awesome! Marshmallows were launched, marbles were shot, small planes were flown and one den blew up a volcano outside. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to help during the night. 女There was a small stuffed lion left at the lock-in, please contact me if it belongs at your house. The WFU Basketball Scout Day on Saturday ended in a 20 point loss to the Seminoles and I know that David and I will eventually come to terms with the loss. Scout Sunday was well attended by both the Cub Scout Pack and our big brothers in the Boy Scout Troop.  A ton of food was collected during the services for Scouting for Food! Please remember to bring in your Scouting for Food donations for the Bread of Life Food Pantry at Northwest Baptist Church next Tuesday on 2/16/16. Also on 2/16/16, we will have the  Pizza Party for the top 15 Pack Popcorn Sellers at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall at Mt Tabor UMC. Our den meetings will be held in our usual den rooms from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC. Additionally, our Bear Den is working hard on the decorations for the Blue & Gold Banquet, they would like to take pictures of each den on Tuesday, 2/16/16, please have your scout wear his class A uniform for those den meetings on 2/16/16.
⏳The deadline to sign up for the Sciworks Sleepover was extended to 2/16/16. The sleepover will be on March 11th. It is $30 for one scout and adult to attend. Please contact me or come to the sign up table on 2/16/16 to sign up. This year’s program is planned to be all about geology. Every boy I know loves rocks and wants to learn about them…… and maybe I do too! 🌚Please remember that you do not have to spend the night to participate, but the boys really like that part.

This message has the details for Friday’s pack lock-in. We all seem to be playing catch up from the “Snow Break” so if you have not signed up and intend to bring your scout, please do so! We are working on our pizza and drinks order and we want to make sure that we have enough food.
We are looking forward to the pack lock-in at Mt Tabor UMC, this Friday, 2/5. Our leaders have been feverishly planning the loops that the boys will complete.
For security purposes, we need to have each scout and parent sign in through the Church Office. We will have a “sign in” table at the end of the first hallway in the office.  The sign in table will open at 5:45 PM. We hope to have all the scouts in their den rooms by 6:00 PM.
Please remember that cub scouts is not a drop off activity. However, if your scout is a wolf scout (in the second grade) or older, you can make arrangements with another pack parent to chaperon him at this event.
You can take your scout to his den room and then put your overnight supplies in the Family Life Center against the wall. Please keep the middle of the FLC clear for our annual kickball event.
Please have your scout wear his class B or cub scout t-shirt to the lock-in.
The tentative schedule for the night is as follows, (we will make adjustments as the circumstances dictate):
  • 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM – Den Loops – Den Rooms – Wolves will be in the Youth Commons instead of the Fellowship Hall
  • 8:00 PM –  Dinner – Dens will eat staggered so there is room for everyone – during dinner PWD Wizard, Kendall Frederick, will answer questions about PWD car building. – Fellowship Hall
  • 8:30ish PM Kickball in the Family Life Center – scouts will join the game after they finish eating
  • 9:30ish PM the Movie Minions begins (air mattress set up & getting ready for bed)
  • Lights out after the Movie
  • Please remember that we must be out of the Family Life Center by 9:00 AM on Saturday
  • Breakfast is on your own
What to bring:
  • Air Mattress
  • Air Pump
  • Extra blankets (sometimes it is cool in the family life center at night)
  • Pillows
  • Toiletries
  • PJs
  • Change of clothes
  • Flashlights

Cub Scout Den Meetings and Events Planning Committee Meeting This Week – 2/2/16

This week, is the deadline to sign up for the WFU Basketball Scout Game, Carolina Raptor Visit, Scout Sunday & the pack Lock-in. If you are going to miss the meeting on Tuesday and want to attend these events, please contact me.  We are also continuing the sign ups for the Sciworks Sleepover in March (deadline of February 9th).
Please remember to pick up your Scouting For Food Door Hangers and/or your Pinewood Derby car kit at the sign up table. The sign up table will be located in room 309.
Please note the Pie Throw has been rescheduled to happen right after the Blue & Gold Banquet.
