Pack Hike Details For The 4/23/16 Trip

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. The details below are for the upcoming Pack Hike on Saturday, April 23rd. This is one of my favorite activities that the pack does. It is going to be a great time. We have 87 people and 2 dogs signed up to go on the trip. We may have some more that sign up on Tuesday night.

2016 Pack Hike

Location & Time:

Timing:

  • Please arrive at 1:30 pm.
  • We will meet in front of the visitor’s center.
  • Please check in with Shannon as she has the event list of participants. If your schedule changes and you are not coming or you run into travel issues and will be late, please contact Shannon at 336-692-4519 or Stefano Marsella at 336-749-2949 as cell reception allows. We will be looking  for you if you are on the sign up list.
  • You may leave anytime after the cookout.

Plan:

  • The park rangers will have a presentation for the scouts at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at the visitor center. The presentation will last about 30 minutes.
  • The hike will begin around 2:40 pm. We will be hiking in one big group made up of smaller groups based on den. Stefano Marsella will lead the hike and the tiger den will go with him. We will have walkie-talkie communication between the hike leader and the hike sweeper at the end of the group.
  • We will hike the Hanging Rock Trail (1.3 miles).
  • The trail is wide and has a gravel surface for most of its length, but becomes more narrow and rocky near the top. This trail, although short, is rated “more difficult” since it climbs steeply and has some obstacles.
  • Blaze color: Orange
  • Parents: to ensure everyone’s safety, please stay with your children at all times (unless you have arranged for another able adult to accompany them). This is a “must” since the terrain can be treacherous.
  • Please check in with Shannon once you are off the trail. She has the participant list. If you don’t check in with her, she will assume you are still on the trail and if we can not locate you within a reasonable amount of time, we will begin combing the trail with the Ranger looking for you and your family.
  • At present, we are planning to have dinner served at the picnic tables near the lake area, if that changes we will let everyone know.

What to bring:

  • There is no cost to participants for this activity
  • Please wear class B uniform (cub scout t-shirt) for this event.
  • Please bring the dessert, side dish or other cookout items that you signed up to bring. If you don’t remember what you signed up to bring, click here.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Bring a light jacket or rain poncho for weather
  • Bring a water bottle for the hike

Cookout

  • We are fortunate to have Mack Moore organizing the cookout. We will be having hotdogs grilled at the picnic shelter, side dishes and desserts brought by our pack members. Click here to see what everyone signed up to bring.
  • If you are able to bring a couple packs of hot dog buns and some drinks, please email me back.
  • We could use two volunteers to stay at the shelter during the hike to help set up the food with Mack.

How to get there:

  • From Winston Salem, NC take Highway 8 North to Danbury. Turn left at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital on Hanging Rock Road. It is 1.5 miles to the park from here.
  • Or, you can enter the address above in your GPS

Community Garden: Yesterday, we planted our own pack vegetable bed (4 x 8 bed) as a part of the larger community garden at Mt Tabor UMC during the church’s Great Day of Service. The output will go to the Samaritan Inn. Thank you to the families that came out to help. We planted grape tomatoes, sweet peppers, mini eggplant, and broccoli. We also put some marigolds and lavender in to keep the pests away.
I don’t know if I will have all the watering procedures from the Community Garden coordinator by Tuesday, but please check (and keep checking) with the sign up table, if you would like to sign up for a week of looking after the pack vegetable bed. This is a great way for your scout to get his service needed to move to the next rank, you can do it over the summer and finish off that requirement before the school year starts. Please click these links to see the picture of the boys and parents planting and the picture of the finished bed. Last night, the Stevens family came by and worked on the fencing to keep the deer from snacking on our garden. Thank you!
Sign ups: This Tuesday is the deadline to sign up for Summer Resident Camp and the Pack Hike. Additionally, we are still signing up for the Spring Family Camping Trip (May 20th weekend) and the Yorktown Trip (November 4th weekend).

I know that many of you received the flier in the mail for Cub Scout Camps mentioned in the last pack email. I did hear back from the council on registration for the Summer Day Camp. It is going to be on-line this year through the Old Hickory Website. I did not see any links for Day Camp Registration on the website yet, but keep checking. For Day Camp, you will be asked for your scout’s health form, I am happy to get you a copy of the one I have on file with the pack, just let me know. If you did not get any information in the mail about these camps, please contact me and we will figure it all out.
We will start sign ups for Great Day of Service (Saturday, April 16th, 8ish – 12) at our sign up table on Tuesday. This year, our pack will be working in Mt Tabor UMC Community Garden. The food raised in the garden has historically gone to the Samaritan Inn. However, I did let the Mt Tabor UMC Gardener know that our neighbors at Northwest Baptist Church and Maple Springs UMC both have food pantries.  Please see me at the sign up table for more details.
We are still signing up for the Pack Hike (4/23), Spring Family Camping Trip (May 20th weekend), Summer Resident Camp (6/15-18) and the Yorktown Trip (November 4th weekend).

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. The pies have been thrown and the whipped cream flew!  Thank you to all who came and helped with the night’s activities at our Pack Meeting this past Tuesday. This coming Tuesday, March 29th, we will not meet because it is spring break in the WSFCS system. We will resume our den meetings on Tuesday, April 5th at 7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC. I have the den meeting rooms listed below unless you have heard something different from your den leader.
  • Tigers – Room 301
  • Wolves – Fellowship Hall
  • Bears-  Room 306
  • Webelos I – Boy Scout Room (Room 120)
If you have not rechartered or gotten word to us about your decision, please contact me as quick as you can.
You should be receiving a flier from our BSA council, Old Hickory, in the mail that will include information on 2016 Summer Cub Scout Day Camp, 2016 Resident Camp and fall 2016 Parent/Son Camporee. Click one of the links to view the Old Hickory Camp Flier page one, two and three.  You can sign up for any of the day camps. However, currently the registration plan for day camp is not yet published from the council. I will be volunteering at the Winston-Salem Day Camp at New Philadelphia Moravian church on 7/11-15.
We have been talking about Resident Camp for awhile in our pack. You can sign up for Resident Camp on our sign up table now but the pack subsidizes the cost based on our excellent popcorn sales so you will notice that the price is less at our sign up. Please note that the council requires us to turn in our sign up registration information by mid-April, so hurry to the sign up table.
To clear up any confusion regarding the Parent/Son Camporee information in the flier, the council will hold the same camporee program for two weekends. Each pack picks which one they want to attend and they handle their own sign ups and paperwork. This mailer is the first time we have gotten the dates for Parent/son too, so we are looking at the dates against our planned calendar for October to decide which date is best and will announce sign ups as soon as we have had some discussion with the pack leadership. If this is still confusing, please contact me and I will answer your questions.
Upcoming Calendar Dates:

4/12/16 – 7:00 pm Leaders’ Meeting -Youth Commons

Three More Cub Scout Things For This Week, 3/15/16

Dear All,
I hope you are well. Three more things for the scout den meetings tomorrow night (7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC unless you have a Tiger Scout).
I wanted to let you know that we are planning to begin sign ups for the Spring Family Camping Trip planned for the May 20th Weekend at beautiful Stone Mountain. This is a very popular event for our pack! The entire family can come for the weekend for just $25.00, even the family dog (as long as he or she is well behaved). There is a family hike! And maybe you can talk Brad into reading or telling stories by the campfire amid the s’mores again this year.
Our Tiger den will be meeting offsite tomorrow night. They are visiting Firestation 18 at 1505 N. Peace Haven road 7:00 PM.
If you have been working with your scout to complete any loops or other awards at home, please let your den leader know tomorrow night during the den meetings or via email so we can purchase your scout’s awards.
