Rank Advancement This Tuesday, 5/24/16 at 6:30 PM

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This coming Tuesday, 5/24/16, is an exciting night for our scouts – It’s Rank Advancement! The ceremony is in the Church Sanctuary and begins at 6:30 PM.
This is a class A uniform event.
We know that it is hard on our families to come early for the ceremony but we do ask that those that can come early, please do. We have divided up the responsibilities as follows below:
  • Setup: Bear Den – 6:10 pm
  • Pack Greeters – Open Doors/Hand Out Programs: Tiger & Wolf Dens – 6:15 pm
  • Flag Ceremony: Webelo I Den
We realize that for many of our families this is the first time you have been to a Rank Advancement Ceremony. Please click here to see a diagram of how things are set up for Rank Advancement. The sign up table will be placed in the lobby area in front of the church sanctuary. Once you are inside the sanctuary, the boys will sit with their dens and their families will sit behind them. You will notice that I reserved two pews for the Webelo I and for the Wolf den, they are our largest dens. We will see when we get there, if we actually need tow pews or not.
As a part of the ceremony, the boys will take off their old neckerchief and slide, walk across the bridge and receive a new neckerchief, slide and book for their new rank. We welcome parents taking pictures, but please be mindful of the boys trying walk by and other parents trying to see or wanting to take pictures as well.
Below are the current sign ups for this Tuesday. Tuesday is the deadline for unpaid
fees as well as the Yorktown weekend and Dash Game & Sleepover. Don’t forget to register your scout for Day Camp!

Den Meeting this Tuesday, May 17th and Pizza Party

Dear All,

I hope everyone is having a fabulous week.  I wanted to remind everyone that next Tuesday, May 17th at 7:00 PM will be the last den meeting until August. If your scout’s den had homework in order to meet their badge requirements, you still have time before Tuesday.  We are also having a pizza party from the Old Hickory Council.  The council is giving us this party based on our excellent Friends of Scouting donations. Thank you all for donating to scouting. The pizza party will take place at the end of the den meetings in the family life center.

Although, it will be the last den meeting for a while, we do have several summer activities scheduled and hope that many of the scouts can participate.  Just think of all that energy they can expend while getting to be with friends!
📣Please note the deadlines that are looming and don’t wait until the last minute.  Rank Advancement is a very busy night and the sign-up table will not be open the entire time so that the volunteers may also watch their scouts advance.
📆We will resume our den meetings this coming fall on Tuesday, August 30th at 7:00 PM at Mt Tabor UMC. Please mark your calendars.
🎙The Council, along with our very own Shannon, is looking for parent volunteers for Day Camp.  Please see the on-line registration form, not only for your scout, but also to volunteer your time.  This is a great program in which I know many of our parents will want to be involved.
Sign ups:
Spring Family Camping Trip, May 20th weekend (deadline Tuesday, May 17th)
Dash Game and Sleepover, June 3rd (deadline Tuesday, May 24)
Yorktown Trip, November 4th weekend (deadline Tuesday, May 24th)

Summer Movie Night July 9th (deadline July 1) See new sign-up sheet at table
🍅Pack Vegetable Bed– We still have several weeks of openings to look after the pack vegetable bed.  If you sign up for a week, it counts as your scout’s service for next year!  They have made it very easy.  All that is required is to run by the UMC community garden several times during the week you schedule.  Ensure the plants are watered.  (There is talk of adding an irrigation system, until then you just use the water bucket from the water collection barrel.)  Pull weeds and pick any ripe vegetables.  If the garden coordinator is there, you give him the vegetables, if not there is a container beside the water collection barrels to place the harvested vegetables in and the coordinator will take them to the food pantry.

Spring Family Camping Trip 2016 Details

Dear All,
We are all looking forward to the upcoming Spring Family Camping Trip on the weekend of May 20th. We have 93 people signed up to come!
Friday Night Arrival Time: There have been many questions especially about arrival time on Friday night. I know we talked about starting dinner around 6:30 PM but we think that getting the kitchen area set up will take longer than that so we have pushed the dinner start time until 7:00 PM.
Location: We are staying in a group camping site at Stone Mountain State Park. The address is 3042 Frank Pkwy, Roaring Gap, NC 28668. The park hours are 8:00 Am to 9:00 PM. Please plan to arrive before 9:00 PM or you will not be able to come into the park. If you are arriving Saturday, you can enter as early as 8:00 AM. Please note that if you are planning to arrive on Saturday morning, please be there by 9:30 AM. Our hike is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
Directions:
From 421 N:

1. Take Hwy 421 N to I-77 N.
2. From I-77, take Exit #83 (Hwy 21 N, Sparta, Roaring Gap) (LEFT Exit).
3. Go about 13 miles to Traphill Road/ State Road 1002 and turn Left. Look for the brown state park sign.
4. Go about 4 miles to John P. Frank Pkwy and turn right. Look for the brown state park sign.
5. Once you go through the gate and past the visitor’s center, look for the road to the camping area and turn right.
6. The group camping area is on the left. (This is tent camping, please bring a tent or see me to borrow one of our two man tents)

Parking: Due to the number of people we have in our group, we may have to park some of our vehicles at the visitor’s center after unloading.

Site assignments: We have all four camp sites reserved (they are all in close proximity). The scouts will be assigned to a site by rank. If you have multiple scouts in different dens, you may choose which site to set up your tent.

Webelos: 1st site to your left, closest to the food area
Tigers: 2nd site to your left
Bears: 1st site to your right
Wolves: Site at the end/back
Please see the attached diagram.

Packing the Pack Equipment: We will load the supplies on the trailer Friday (May 20th) beginning about 1:00 PM. We need several people in order to get done and leave by 3:00 PM. If you have any extra space in your vehicle, please come to the church at 1:00 PM and let us load supplies in your vehicle. There will be lot of food and supplies to be loaded. We also need at least 8 people to help set up the canopy after arriving Friday. Then after the canopy is set up, we need people to set up the kitchen and organize supplies. No worries about the boys, we all help supervise during set up.

Ice: If you have room in your cooler, please bring some extra ice. We have needed additional ice in past years to keep the camp food cold.

Cup Mugs: In an effort to reduce waste of disposable coffee cups, we would like to ask that you bring your own camp mug and/or refillable water bottle. This is a great time to invest in an insulated metal mug- they are great for camping. Please write your name on your mugs unless you don’t mind drinking someone else’s coffee.

Bikes/scooters: Due to the large number of people attending, we are asking that you do not bring any bikes or scooters this year. We appreciate your cooperation with this request.

Dogs: You are welcome to bring your dog if it is friendly around other dogs, strangers and children.

Friday Night Dinner: This year, we will be cooking hot dogs for dinner Friday night to go along with the salads and desserts that families are bringing. I am still in need of some additional salads and desserts, please let me know if you can bring one.

Saturday Pack Hike: Due to our large number of people, it is imperative that when we prepare to go on our hike that we pay attention to how we are grouped. We will assign a lead person and a tail person. We ask that parents be responsible for their scout, but we need to stay as a group on the hike and that means within visual contact. We will divide into smaller groups, as there are options to length of hiking trails to take. Please begin discussing with your scout/children the safety importance of hiking. We will review rules prior to the hike as well. We will need parents to volunteer to be the lead/tail, so if you know this is a strength of yours, please volunteer.

Whittling Chip: New Scouts and/or Rising Third Graders and up –  Our rising bear scouts are eligible to work on their whittling chip on the Spring Family camping trip. Shannon sent out messages about this to the rising bear or current wolf families in January. The Whittling Chip includes training for how to safely handle a small pocket knife. The rising bear or current wolf den leaders will handle this session for the boys and their parents. Older scouts that are new to the pack or missed this session earlier, can attend as well. Our pack takes the safe use of knives very seriously, we have posted rules and information for our parents on the website to ensure that we keep everyone safe. Please read this information and be aware of our parent’s responsibilities concerning the boys handling knives. Some families make getting a pocket knife a part of this event for the boys.

Dutch Oven Contest: We will have a Dutch Oven Contest on Saturday. We have dutch ovens that may be borrowed. I will need to know if you plan to enter the contest so we will make sure we have enough desserts for dinner Saturday. It is recommended that you bring parchment paper or dutch oven liners to make it easier to clean afterwards. Also, you will need to bring charcoal and a chimney. We will also be taking dessert donations for Saturday night (in addition to Friday night)- let me know.

Saturday Night Campfire: Saturday night, after dinner, we have a campfire. We usually sing songs (song books & sheets available), the kids do skits, sometimes, we can convince Brad to read some NC legends, lore or something else interesting for everyone and we will retire a flag. We need a person to volunteer to coordinate the campfire. You don’t have to be a circus ringmaster to do this, just keep things going. please let me know if you would like to help. Since we will be roasting marshmallows, if you have a marshmallow stick, please bring it or bring a non-painted wire coat hanger.

Please note: The pack will supply marshmallows for Saturday evening, but please bring a bag for Friday evening if you would like to roast some then as well.

Class A uniform: Scouts will need to bring their Class A uniform to wear for dinner Saturday evening and for the campfire/flag retirement ceremony that evening. This is the only time the Class A will be required to be worn over the weekend.

Cub Scout Day Camp Online Registration Available on Sunday, May 1st

Dear Pack Family,
I hope you are all well. I wanted to let you know that I heard last night that the on-line registration for Day Camp will be available from the Council website by this Sunday, May 1st!
Camp is the week of July 11-15th. Our location has changed since the flier was published. We are now going to be at the Children’s Home off of Reynolda road in Winston Salem. The hours are 8:30 – 4:30 each day except on Friday. On Friday, we will have a parent luncheon and end early. Early drop off and late pick up will be available as well by prearrangement.
I am also looking for volunteers to work Day Camp. The council is putting the application on-line as well. I would love to have adults and youth. The volunteers do not have to be BSA as there is required BSA training to work with the boys.

Tonight, our Wolf Den is in charge of set up. Those wolves that can come 15 minutes early, please do and help set up the chairs. The flags and banners are located in the Boy Scout Room. Our Bear den has the flag ceremony. Those bears that can come a few minutes early, please do.

Tonight is Hope’s (new pack secretary) first night on the sign up table and we have some parents and pack leaders helping her at the table. We don’t have any sign up deadlines so there is plenty of time to sign up for things. You don’t know how unhappy I am that I can’t be there, please stop by the sign up table and meet Hope.

Saturday’s Pack Hike A Few More Notes

Dear All,

I hope you are all having a great week. We are looking forward to Saturday’s hike. Just a few reminders:

Arrival Time: We originally planned the day to start at 2:00 PM but to ensure that everyone is ready to start the Program with the Hanging Rock Rangers at 2:00 PM, we have adjusted our arrival time to 1:30 PM (You may have noticed the timing change in the information that went out last Sunday). If you expect to be late, please let me know. Cell service is dicey up there so the earlier you can let us know that better. Shannon – 336-692-4519.

Water bottles: Please do not forget to bring a water bottle for each person in your family. In addition to using the water on the actual hike, you will be using your water bottle for your cookout drink as well. We will have water or lemonade available but you will need to use your water bottle to put the water or lemonade in. We are trying to avoid generating extra trash and respect our environment. Please put your names on your water bottles. If something happens to your water bottle and it is leaking, is crushed or is dropped over the side of the hanging rock, please see me and we will figure it out.

Cookout Food: We are grateful that everyone is bringing food from home for the cookout. Please pack it so it can be left in your car during the hike without spoiling and bring it with you to the picnic shelter after the hike. Please label your dishes and utensils so we can make sure they go home with you.

Program: As mentioned above, the Park Rangers are doing a program about the Indians who lived at Hanging Rock and the boys will be playing some of the games that the Indian children played. The program will be outside on the right side of the Visitor’s Center (as you are facing the Visitor’s Center). If you are running behind, that is where everyone will be, however, please check in with me even if you are late. I think it is probably too late in our friendship for me to try to hide my compulsiveness. ☺

I will post this on the main page of the pack website as well.

It is going to be a great day trip!

See you Saturday,

Shannon
