About Cub Scouts

Cub Scouts is open to all children in grades K – 5.  The program is designed with the ages of the children in mind.

All new scouts must obtain their Bobcat badge before moving on to their grade specific rank.  The Bobcat requirements are designed to give each scout the essential information they need to be successful at Cub Scouts.  The will learn the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, what Webelos means, the Cub Scout Sign, Handshake, Motto and Salute.  They will also have to complete exercises with their parent/guardian on how to prevent child abuse.  More information is available here.

1st grade – Tiger Cubs.  For the youngest cub scouts, they learn to do things with a family member.  They learn about the community, sports, rule following, etc.  And they have fun doing it!  A parent or guardian must attend each meeting with their Tiger Cub.  More information is available here.

2nd grade – Wolf Cubs.  The scouts are getting a little bit older, and are able to do more than they could last year.  The requirements to earn the Wolf rank badge are more difficult than it was for the Tiger rank.  While some of the achievements will be performed in the Den meetings, most of them will be completed by the scout and his parent/guardian at home.  As their child’s Akela, the parent/guardian will sign in their child’s handbook that they have done their best to complete the achievements.  At the Den meeting, the Den leader will record the achievements that have been signed off.  More information can be found here.

3rd Grade – Bear Cubs. This is the final year that most achievements will be worked on at home.  The Bear Scout also has more achievements that need to be completed than they had as a Wolf.  At the first Den meeting of the school year, your Den Leader will hand out a list of the achievements that will be completed in the Den meetings and the ones that will be done at home.  Also, your Den Leader will be looking for volunteers to lead individual Den meetings.  Look at the list of achievements that will be worked on in the Den meetings and pick one that you can help with.  More information can be found here.

4th & 5th Grade – Webelos.  The Webelos program spans two school grades.  All 4th graders will be in a Webelos I den, while all 5th graders will be in a Webelos II den.  The Webelos program marks the transition between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.  While Cub Scouts is more parent involved and led, Boy Scouts is scout led.  In Webelos the scouts work together to learn a variety of skills, from outdoor activities to first aid.  The scouts in the Den will earn activity pins for each skill they learn.  They will earn their Webelos rank badge, then work on Compass emblem and Compass points.  By the end of February of their 5th grade year, the scout can have earned the Arrow of Light.  More information about Webelos is available here.

The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting.  It is the only Cub Scout award that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform.  To earn the Arrow of Light, a scout has to already have earned their Webelos rank badge.  You can view the Arrow of Light requirements here.
